Income Inequality by the Numbers: San Francisco and California
In 2015, San Francisco had the second highest rate of income inequality in the United States, following only Atlanta. Earners in the 95th income percentile made roughly seventeen times as much as earners in the 20th percentile. Gentrification, and the subsequent rent explosions, continue to make the city unaffordable to everyone except the super wealthy. Today, in the state of California, those in the 1% make nearly twenty-nine times the average income of the other 99% of the population.
